Part of the "research triangle" is North Carolina State University at Raleigh, or NC State. Along with Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, these college form the triangle connecting Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. NC State is a public university that educates both men and women. As the largest university in the state, NC State has over 33,000 students enrolled in one of 106 bachelor's degrees, 104 Master's degrees, or 61 doctoral degrees. The college also has grants in land, sea, and space.

In March of 1887, the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts was founded by the General Assembly. They started with a focus on agriculture, mechanical arts, and military tactics. Today, the name may have changed to North Carolina State University at Raleigh but the focus has not changed. The name of NC State has been changed a lot since its start. Because of protest by students and alumni, the name, now, has been set in stone. After the initial naming, it was the University of North Carolina, which was a combination of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, and the Women's College at Greensboro. Then it changed to North Carolina State University in 1962 and then soon after was changed to the University of North Carolina at Raleigh. This is when the protesting began. Students and alumni alike were frustrated and dissatisfied with the name. Then in 1963, the name was changed to North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh. Wow! That is one crazy university name. No wonder the students, alumni, and faculty were so upset! So, the protesting continued for two more years and FINALLY the name was changed to North Carolina State University at Raleigh!

When the school became 100 years old, they celebrated by changing the names of all their different schools to colleges. These include: the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Design, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Management, the College of Natural Resources, the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, the College of Textiles, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and a First Year College. Out of all the different Colleges offered at NC State, the most students (undergrad and graduate) are enrolled in the College of Engineering. In this College, there are many different areas of study to receive a degree in including Paper Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering. Second to the College of Engineering for enrollment is the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This school offers degrees in fields such as Biological Sciences, Animal Science, Biochemistry, and Genetics.

It is not all about studying, studying, studying! The students like to have fun too! NC State has a few fun student traditions that make this school unique. First of all, since 1991, the students have been holding a "Shack-a-Thon" in order to raise money for the Habitat for Humanity of Wake County. At this event, NC State students move out into the Brickyard and build "shacks" that they will live in for a week. When other students, faculty, staff, or visitors walk through the shack filled Brickyard, the students living there for the week ask for donations! The money raised is used to build a house!

Another fun tradition is Homecoming. Most schools have a Homecoming week but not many have one that is completely run by students! At the beginning of the week there will always be a starting kickoff party and ends with a pep rally that includes a concert! The week of Homecoming you can expect to see events like, "Wear Red-Get Fed," a parade, dresses, and a spirit competition. The ending concert always includes a well known band or music artist. Past acts include Ludacris, The Avett Brothers, and Lonestar. This sounds like a fun week at NC State.

The most unique tradition that NC State has is the Krispy Kreme Challenge. From the name of it, it sounds like fun! In order to raise money for the NC Children's Hospital, in an hours time, students race two from the University's Memorial Bell Tower to the Krispy Kreme. Once there, the student must completely eat a dozen donuts and run back before time is up! Exercising while eating donuts sounds like a really great and tasty way to raise money! With all that running, at least you will burn some of those calories you take in by eating a DOZEN Krispy Kreme donuts!

Speaking of running, the Athletic teams at North Carolina State University at Raleigh must run a lot because they are known as the Wolfpack! In all actuality, the name came to be because of crazy "wolf pack" acting fans. Before being called the Wolf Pack, you could hear the teams being referred to as the Farmers, the Red Terrors, the Aggies, and the Techs. Now, you will see "Tuffy" the wolf, a purebred Tamaskan Dog, as the live mascot. You will also see Mr. and Mrs. Wuf or the Strutting Wolf wherever you see NC State logos and fan apparel. The NC State Wolfpack is a part of the ACC and has eight national championships. The biggest rival of NC State is University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Tarheels. In combination with the Wolfpack mascot, will be the colors, red and white. SidelineSweeite.com has a fair share of red, white and color combination apparel for the ladies at NC State. Red dresses, White dresses, or printed red and white dresses can be found in a number of the designers that we carry.
