Located in beautiful Tallahassee, Florida State University is a public university that includes 15 colleges and 39 facilities, labs, institutes, and centers. The university has more than 300 study and professional programs and enrolls over 40,000 students. Game day dress colors are garnet and gold and they are known as the Seminoles. Out of all other colleges in the state, Florida State University is the oldest and was founded in 1851.

In 1823, the Territorial Legislature decided to begin a higher education system. Fifteen years later, land was set aside for the construction of two education centers. The West Florida Seminary and East Coast Seminary were started. The Seminary is the beginning school of Florida State and the East Coast Seminary is the beginning of the University of Florida. So, like many other universities that are in existence today, they went through a lot of changes over the years with additions and subtractions to the facilities and many name changes. It was not until 1947 that the university got its current name Florida State University.

The main campus sits upon 489 acres in downtown Tallahassee, and the university owns 1,500 other acres. In addition to the main campus, a Southwest campus covers 850 acres of land. Aside from the regular buildings, like student housing, greek village, academic buildings, and seven libraries, you will find at a college, FSU is home to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. This Laboratory is 330,000 square feet of high magnetic filed facilities that is used by scientist in the areas of biochemistry, chemistry, biology, physics, bioengineering, geochemistry, engineering, and materials science. The facility has over 300 employees which includes graduate and postdoctoral students. You will not find another laboratory this large or as high powered anywhere in the world that has continuous magnetic fields. In the United States it is the one and only magnetic field laboratory out of nine in the world! In the high magnetic field laboratory, the anti-cancer drug, Taxol, was created. The oldest colleges, started in 1901, are the college of Arts & Sciences, college of human sciences, college of education, and college of music. After that, it was not until 1928 that the college of social work was added. From then on, other colleges added were the college of visual arts, theatre & dance, college of communication and information, the college of business, college of nursing, college of law, college of social sciences and public policy, college of criminology and criminal justice, college of engineering, college of motion picture arts, and lastly, the college of medicine was added in 2000. Some of the programs are so popular that only select students are allowed to get degrees. These select programs are called Limited Access Programs and include degrees in nursing, education, dance, and business. FSU also has a highly ranked international study program.

Florida State Gameday Dresses

Each year over 1600 students study abroad at study centers. These centers are located in Panama city, Republic of Panama; London, England; Florence, Italy; and Valencia, Spain. Students also travel to Australia, Argentina, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Croatia, Uruguay, Turkey, Switzerland, South Africa, Peru, Russia, Israel, France, and Ecuador for shorter time period studies. Another fun thing about this university is that the Florida State Seminoles has its own circus called the FSU Flying High Circus and performs each fall. Greek life makes up for a large amount of student organizations. There are 22 fraternities, 16 sororities, 9 cultural organizations, and 9 historically black organizations. Over 4,500 students are involved in Greek life groups at Florida State; and these girls need sorority dresses!

As you must know, sports and athletics are a major part of what makes this such a great university. As a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the school has achieved twelve national athletic championships in addition to the number of individual competitor NCAA awards. Students have a lot of pride in their football and other athletic teams and buy game day dresses online . The Marching Chiefs are the largest marching band at a college in the world and are known for playing the war chant! The fight song of was originally a published poem written by a student. A musician by the name of Tommy Wright put a melody to the song and thus the fight song was created! Just a little part of this fight song goes like this: "We've got to fight, fight, fight for F.S.U., We've got to scalp 'em Seminoles, We've got to win, win, win, win, win this game, And roll on down and make those goals!"
